Common failure handling methods for cnc lathe tool post

August 24, 2025

Common failure of cnc  lathe tool post and their handling methods are as follows:

1.The tool post does not rotate:

First, determine whether it is a mechanical problem inside the tool post or a motor failure of the tool post. When changing the tool, touch the motor with your hand to check for any vibration and measure the motor voltage to determine if the motor is functioning properly.

If the motor is normal, it might be that the mechanical part inside the tool post is stuck. At this point, the tool post can be removed for cleaning and reinstallation.

It is also possible that there is internal mechanical damage, which requires further inspection and replacement of relevant components.

2.The tool post keeps rotating continuously or a certain tool position does not stop:

It might be that there is a short circuit or open circuit in the wiring of the message board. It is necessary to check the wiring condition of the message board.

The height position of the Hall element and the magnetic steel may not be accurate, and their relative positions need to be adjusted.

3.When the tool is idle, it operates normally, but there is a large error when processing parts.

It might be that the connection between the lead screw or nut and the lathe part is loose. At this point, the connecting parts need to be tightened.

It is also possible that the tool rest fails to automatically lock after tool changing, causing the tool to deviate from the processing point when cutting. In this case, it is necessary to inspect the tool rest locking device and the tool rest control box, and carry out corresponding maintenance or replacement.

4.Servo system failure

If the rotation of the tool post is driven by a servo motor and an alarm occurs as soon as the motor starts, it may be that the servo motor has burned out. At this point, the servo motor needs to be replaced.

5.Photoelectric sensing device failure

It is manifested as misalignment of the photoelectric sensing device or obstruction of the light source. The photoelectric sensing device can be disassembled and reassembled or the light source hole can be cleaned to restore its function.

6.Electrical fault

The relay of the tool post controller in the control cabinet may trip or burn out, resulting in the system being unable to supply power to the tool post. At this point, the relay needs to be replaced.

7.The precision of the tool post is inaccurate.

①If the tool post is not locked tightly, it may be necessary to extend the locking time of the tool post.

②There may be garbage at the broken tooth area. The tool rest needs to be disassembled for cleaning, and all parts should be washed and clean engine oil should be added.

③The pressure die part of the upper tool body may be deformed under pressure, resulting in poor gear meshing. The upper tool body needs to be replaced.

When dealing with faults in the tool rest of a CNC lathe, it is essential to follow the corresponding operating procedures and safety guidelines to ensure correct and safe operation. If you are not sure how to handle certain malfunctions, it is recommended to contact professional technicians for maintenance.
